Use a Model

Follow a model. Don't be afraid to follow a model. This is different from copying. Find a song you like, and take apart how it works -- the verses, the choruses, the lyrics, the chord progressions, the hook. Following the structure of the song you chose as a model, write your own song. Having to fit your song to the structure will both help you learn how songs are constructed as well as help focus your own creativity.
